Storia del Nuovo Tabacchificio.
La Borsa Mediterranea del Turismo Archeologico di Paestum per la prima volta trova la sua location definitiva: trattasi del complesso immobiliare dell’ex Tabacchificio, a soli 1.000 metri dall’area archeologica nel Borgo Cafasso, centro rurale sorto agli inizi del secolo scorso e sviluppatosi intorno agli impianti produttivi. La manifestazione nacque nel 1998, grazie alla Provincia di Salerno, presieduta allora da Alfonso Andria, che volle sostenere fortemente l’intuizione del Fondatore e Direttore Ugo Picarelli, intravedendo nell’iniziativa una strategica opportunità di valorizzazione dell’area archeologica di Paestum, che era stata riconosciuta, proprio in quell’anno, patrimonio dell’Unesco. L’ex Tabacchificio rappresenta un esempio mirabile di come, agli inizi degli anni Venti, l’iniziativa imprenditoriale, dapprima nel settore ortofrutticolo, poi con l’introduzione dell’industria del tabacco, abbia determinato un significativo stimolo per lo sviluppo di insediamenti nella Piana del Sele. Tutto ebbe inizio quando un imprenditore del Nord, Bonvicini, dopo aver acquistato una tenuta da 299 ettari, decise di investire nel nostro territorio, attratto dalla fertilità dei terreni, e vi fece costruire un impianto di trasformazione della frutta (per lo più pesche da sigillare in scatola). Ma il frutteto non diede gli esiti sperati: mancavano le apparecchiature idonee, in particolare celle frigorifere e i terreni ben presto si scoprì fossero troppo salsedinosi. Una geniale intuizione di Bonvicini fu quella di circondarsi di operatori dell’agro-nocerino, esperti di orticoltura; sicché, alla sua morte, l’impianto fu acquistato da un imprenditore salernitano, De Martino, che godeva dell’appoggio di potenti e influenti uomini politici, tra cui il senatore Farina, e i due si adoperarono per far mettere in piedi la struttura del Tabacchificio. Fu evidente sin dagli esordi che l’impianto non soddisfava esigenze meramente produttive, bensì anche di natura sociale. Questo spazio occupazionale segnò un importante cambiamento generazionale e diede sollievo e speranza alle famiglie meno abbienti in un momento storico segnato da incertezze e profondo sconforto (parliamo, chiaramente, del Dopoguerra). Protagoniste privilegiate furono le donne, che costituivano la stragrande maggioranza della massa lavoratrice del Tabacchificio: un dato decisamente insolito, considerati gli standard dell’epoca. Nel contempo, la nuova attività offriva “un posto sicuro” ai beni dei contadini locali. Vi fu una forte spinta alla contrattualistica da parte dei medesimi, rassicurati dall’operatività agricola del territorio e dalla certezza che i propri prodotti non sarebbero andati perduti. L’esperienza del Tabacchificio è durata fino agli anni Settanta. Le forti restrizioni della politica europea, fondata su quote limitate, che rendevano le attività imprenditoriali economicamente insostenibili, decretarono la fine della gestione privata dell’edificio e la sua caduta nelle mani delle istituzioni locali, con tutto ciò che comporta in termini di ambizioni personali. I primi tentativi di acquisto si rivelarono fallimentari e finirono col relegare il Tabacchificio a uno stato di degrado e di totale abbandono. Ebbene, oggi Capaccio Paestum ha a disposizione una struttura pubblica in più, che apre a nuove e rassicuranti prospettive per il futuro. Mancò alle amministrazioni precedenti il decisionismo e il coraggio di concludere la procedura di acquisto, che invece l’attuale Amministrazione, guidata dal Sindaco Franco Alfieri, ha sapientemente intrapreso con l’obiettivo preciso di realizzare un contenitore prestigioso e imponente da utilizzare per attività di pubblico interesse, all’altezza della storia e dello splendore della Città di Capaccio Paestum. Un’iniziativa giusta che capita al momento giusto, inserendosi nell’ambito delle misure di rilancio dell’economia locale, dopo la paralisi delle attività produttive causata dalla crisi pandemica; misura di cui beneficerà in primis il Cafasso, contrada da sempre isolata e priva di fermento socio – culturale, la quale sembrava destinata all’oblio. Il Cafasso diverrà, grazie al Nuovo Tabacchificio, un importante polo attrattivo per i turisti della città dei Templi, sicché sarebbe auspicabile che l’Amministrazione potenziasse il suo intervento di riqualificazione della zona, ad esempio investendo in attività collaterali al “centro propulsore” (ristoranti, strutture alberghiere), a loro volta ben collegate al sito archeologico di Paestum, per intensificare l’offerta ai visitatori e migliorare la qualità della vita degli autoctoni.
