Heath Ledger e Philip Seymour Hoffman. L’immenso talento, la fine tragica e prematura
Spesso la storia della cinematografia hollywoodiana è costellata da tragedie e, ancora più spesso, queste tragedie contribuiscono, in maniera prepotente, a creare il Mito. Una sorta di tributo da pagare agli Dei, un sacrificio rituale come nelle migliori tradizioni sciamane. Quasi sempre il mito è alimentato dall’età e dal talento. Un esempio su tutti: James Dean, il bello e dannato che ha voluto scolpire nella memoria la sua immagine eternamente giovane affinché non si sarebbe avuto contezza della sua decadenza fisica. Di storie così ce ne sono abbastanza. Ne prendiamo a prestito due. Quelle di Heath Ledger e Philip Seymour Hoffman, due attori dal talento semplicemente immenso, che troppo presto ci hanno lasciato e che fanno accusare quel senso di vuoto per ciò che sicuramente sarebbe stato: un susseguirsi di interpretazioni a omaggiare la loro grandezza e la nostra sete di conoscenza della recitazione. Già, la recitazione. Caotica, minimalista, beffarda, melanconica quella di Ledger. Potente, introspettiva, fulminante, trasandata quella di Seymour Hoffman. Età diverse, certo. Heath Ledger è australiano, parte giovanissimo e non colleziona subito successi. Provini andati male, come quello per il kolossal Alexander (parte poi andata a Colin Farrell) e film che non hanno avuto grande riscontro. Si comincia a intravedere il talento puro in “Le quattro piume” dove è finalmente protagonista di un film dal cast importante. Ma, ovviamente, quando si pensa ad un attore, lo si accosta a pellicole che ti rimangono impresse. Per Ledger, a parere di chi vi scrive, sono due, diametralmente opposte come tipo di approccio. Ed è questo che fa di un interprete un fuoriclasse. Ruoli che sono in antitesi, scavati, esplorati fino a farli propri. Il suo Joker, zero empatia, portato all’eccesso, dinoccolato, sociopatico assoluto, raccoglie l’eredità di un mostro sacro come Jack Nicholson e fa da preludio a quello che poi sarebbe stato il ruolo di Joaquin Phoenix e che tanto successo avrebbe avuto. L’immagine di quel Joker ha un successo stratosferico nell’iconografia del periodo. Oscar postumo come miglior attore non protagonista. L’altro ruolo che ne consacra la grandezza è quello di Ennis Del Mar in “I segreti di Brokeback Mountain”, pellicola in cui interpreta in maniera devastante un taciturno cowboy, omofobo, malinconico, che si innamora di un uomo. La sua recitazione è minimale, parole vicine allo zero e scene brusche interpretate con naturalezza in un ruolo difficilissimo, tagliato sul suo talento. Alcuni ciak sono iconici, come il bacio rabbioso a Jake Gyllenhaal o l’ultima scena in cui conserva una camicia imbrattata di sangue dell’amante perduto. Ma tante altre cose è Heath Ledger in quel film. Philip Seymour Hoffman raggiunge la piena maturità in età più avanzata, ma già nel cameo de “Il Grande Lebowski” si intuiscono tempi e facce da grande attore. Anche qui, pur essendo presente in tante pellicole di successo, sono un paio i film che rappresentano alla perfezione il suo modo di recitare: “Onora il Padre e la Madre” e “The Master”. Ovviamente non dimentichiamo il suo Truman Capote, che gli valse la statuetta più ambita come attore protagonista ma, in questi due film, emerge il talento puro, la capacità di trasmettere quasi in assenza di gesti. La parte che interpreta in “Onora il Padre e la Madre” è quella di un personaggio, cocainomane, che per rimettere in sesto finanziariamente lui e il fratello, organizza una rapina nella gioielleria dei genitori. I risultati sono drammatici con il suo personaggio che si lascia man mano inghiottire dalla devastazione degli eventi e lo fa in modo mirabile. In “The Master” è in concorrenza, per bravura, con Joaquin Phoenix. Il Santone che fa il verso a Scientology, carismatico e in grado di ipnotizzare i prescelti, quasi sottometterli, così da indirizzare le loro vite. La sua parte è spettacolare. Una finta esaltazione che nasconde il buio e la condanna, che ti viene trasmessa in ogni suo gesto nel film. Una capacità interpretativa senza eguali nel modo di recitare moderno. Le situazioni che si creano te le fa sentire addosso. Entrambi gli attori sono stati accomunati dallo stesso triste destino: morti giovani, in circostanze analoghe e prima di esprimere compiutamente il loro strepitoso talento. Sarebbe stato magnifico assistere alla crescita di Heath Ledger e alla sua evoluzione artistica. Sarebbe stato ancora meglio godere del talento inarrivabile di Philip Seymour Hoffman e dei suoi lavori sempre più ambiziosi. Lui cresciuto nel cinema indipendente. Entrambi assuefatti a droghe e psicofarmaci, quasi che il loro smisurato talento esigesse un prezzo da pagare. Il più alto possibile. Spesso è così, più spesso di quanto si immagini.
