Cari lettori, in questo articolo cercherò di spiegarvi che cos’è e di cosa si occupa l’Ortodonzia attraverso una scala di domande che risultano essere quelle che i miei pazienti mi pongono con più frequenza durante la mia pratica clinica.
Di cosa si occupa l’Ortodonzia e perché è cosi importante?
L’Ortodonzia è una branca dell’odontoiatria che si occupa della diagnosi e del trattamento delle posizioni anomale dei denti e dei difetti delle ossa mascellari. In primo luogo, si ha lo scopo di ripristinare una corretta funzione sia dei denti che delle ossa mascellari e non si tratta quindi solo di estetica dentale. Poi, che un sorriso ben allineato sia anche esteticamente apprezzabile è un effetto secondario ad una funzionalità complessiva ripristinata.
Qual è l’età giusta per iniziare un trattamento ortodontico?
Proprio perché è una scienza che si occupa, tra le altre cose, della crescita dei mascellari, è di fondamentale importanza portare dal dentista il/la proprio/a figlio/a a partire dai 4 anni di età, perché ci sono malocclusioni che necessitano di un trattamento precoce in modo da poter consentire una crescita armoniosa dei mascellari e una corretta eruzione dei denti permanenti. (Ortodonzia intercettiva). La terapia ortodontica può essere eseguita anche sull’adulto per ottenere un allineamento dentale. La differenza che c’è tra un trattamento ortodontico eseguito nel bambino e quello di un adulto è che nel primo le ossa sono in crescita quindi si può sfruttare la fase di sviluppo per correggere le malocclusioni mentre nell’adulto la fase di sviluppo è giunta al termine e si hanno, quindi, dei limiti di trattamento.
Che cos’è e come funziona l’apparecchio fisso?
L’apparecchio fisso è uno strumento medico che viene installato all’interno del cavo orale e che non può essere rimosso dal paziente. È formato da un sistema di piastrelle (bracket) che sono attaccate sui denti e attraverso i quali vengono fatti passare degli archi che esprimono delle forze in grado di favorire l’allineamento dentale.
Gli apparecchi mobili invece?
Gli apparecchi mobili sono utilizzati principalmente per modificare abitudini errate e comportamenti scorretti che si sono sviluppati durante l’età evolutiva. Influiscono positivamente sulla crescita e sullo sviluppo delle arcate e dei mascellari, agendo anche sulla componente ossea e muscolare. Il grande vantaggio è che non rendono difficoltosa l’igiene orale, dato che devono essere rimossi quando si mangia.
Qual è la durata di una terapia ortodontica?
L’apparecchio va tenuto per un tempo di una durata variabile che può essere da qualche mese a diversi anni in base alla problematica del paziente e sarà compito del dentista compiere una stima generale. Il trattamento si considera terminato col raggiungimento di tutti gli obiettivi prefissati.
L’apparecchio dentale trasparente cos’è e come funziona?
Si tratta di un trattamento ortodontico basato su un sistema di mascherine invisibili e removibili che vengono create su misura. Essendo trasparenti non alterano l’estetica del sorriso durante il trattamento. Durante la prima visita, il professionista effettua una visita approfondita per stabilire il tipo di problematica del paziente. Si procede, in un secondo momento, alla presa di impronte che serviranno per la costruzione delle mascherine invisibili che avranno all’interno già i movimenti programmati per l’allineamento dei denti.
Il risultato ottenuto dura per sempre?
Col passare degli anni le arcate dentali, fisiologicamente, tendono a restringersi; per questo è consigliata sempre una fase di mantenimento post-terapia. Ci sono varie possibilità per mantenere i denti nella posizione corretta:
– una contenzione fissa interna, solitamente un filo di acciaio ortodontico fissato sulla parete interna dei denti della stessa arcata;
– una contenzione mobile, che di solito consiste in un bite di materiale plastico trasparente;
Il periodo di mantenimento varia da caso a caso e va valutato dall’ortodontista in base alle caratteristiche del paziente.
