Una delle definizioni più usate ed abusate è: il Genio del ‘900. In ambito cinematografico ancora di più, abbracciando un periodo amplissimo che può andare da Charlie Chaplin a Buster Keaton a Orson Welles a Kubrick, solo per citarne alcuni. Ma se c’è qualcuno di “commestibile” che merita senz’altro questo “titolo” quello è Woody Allen. Attore, sceneggiatore, scrittore e commediografo statunitense. Regista raffinato e, consentitemi, cerebrale. I suoi film sono per molti, ma anche per pochi. Alcune battute le puoi capire solo se sai. E ce ne sono tantissime. Woody Allen porta sullo schermo quel che l’animo umano prova, una sorta di autobiografia di sé stesso. Ipocondriaco, divorziato più volte, dissacrante, perennemente in analisi. Pur tuttavia, in patria, non è stato mai apprezzato quanto avrebbe meritato. In uno dei suoi film, “Hollywood Ending”, dove interpretava un regista che, per una improvvisa cecità, diresse un film sconclusionato venendo crocifisso in patria ma osannato in Europa, quando il suo editore gli portò i giornali d’oltreoceano, lui esclamò: “Dio benedica i francesi”. Lui, ateo convinto. Bisogna fare una distinzione fra il primo Allen, quello, per intenderci, di “Prendi i soldi e scappa”, “Amore e Guerra”, “Il Dormiglione” e il secondo, quello che inizia con “Io e Annie”. Il primo ha una comicità più fisica, più da gag, il secondo ci consegna il Woody Allen che conosciamo, quello arguto, quello geniale, pur non tralasciando mai quella verve comica che pervade i suoi lavori. Come fare ad elencare le battute celebri. Troppe ce ne sono. Qualcuna la diremo. A parere di chi vi scrive, l’ultimo, vero, capolavoro assoluto è “Crimini e misfatti”, film per palati fini, cui la fine dà quel senso di inutile a tutto il film, che sembrava pregno di buoni principi. Quando Martin Landau esclama: “E poi, improvvisamente, niente. Tutto dimenticato. Il sole splende, la vita sorride di nuovo”. Per chi ha visto, sa di cosa parlo. Woody Allen ha avuto le sue muse e i suoi attori favoriti. Mia Farrow, Angelica Houston, anche Michael Cane, ma, senza dubbio, quella che ha segnato il suo cinema è Diane Keaton. Come protagonista maschile, non poteva fare a meno di Alan Alda. Ogni film è permeato da complessi esistenziali, puttane, analisti, tradimenti, paura della morte. Ma quello che folgora nel suo cinema sono le freddure improvvise, quelle che non ti aspetti. “Non posso ascoltare troppo Wagner, se no mi viene voglia di invadere la Polonia”. “Tra il Papa e l’aria condizionata, io scelgo l’aria condizionata”. “Io non ti odio, credo solo che tu viva nell’insana convinzione di piacere alla gente”. Gli Alleniani, come chi vi scrive, hanno visto tutto, provando quel senso di abbandono quando firma la regia ma non prende parte al film. Ti rimane quel senso di incompiuto e di lesa maestà quando senti pronunciare battute che erano solo sue. Caratteristica principe è la sua New York piovosa, da cui prescinde malvolentieri. Che dire di più, troppo manca e mai sarà sufficiente per descrivere quello che è un vero genio, un melanconico essere umano vittima di tutto ciò che è il malessere di vivere. Non si può fare cinema così se non si provano quelle cose. Chiudiamo per forza, ma non volentieri, con la scena cult di “Io e Annie”: “Sei libera venerdì?”. “Sì”. “Ah no, venerdì ho un impegno. Scusa. Sei libera sabato?”. “Sì”. “Hey, stai andando a ruba, cos’hai, un principio di lebbra?”. Ci sarebbe tanto altro, ma va bene così. Woody Allen, uno per cui vale la pena vivere.
