Il Dottore in psicologia Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, pioniere della psicologia positiva, formulò nel 1975 la teoria del Flow; venne definito dal New York Times “un uomo ossessionato dalla felicità” che, in una società altrettanto ossessionata, ha trovato la massima espressione. Nel 1993 Jimmy Johnson, allenatore dei Dallas Cowboys, mostrò il libro sul Flow alla telecamera durante l’interruzione del Super Bowl, spiegando che le idee in quel libro eccezionale avevano contribuito molto alla preparazione della squadra. Si è rivelato essere un buon riferimento, poiché la squadra ha vinto il Super Bowl in quell’anno. L’obiettivo di Csikszentmihalyi è quello di massimizzare la produttività delle risorse umane, portando il lavoratore ad essere in una condizione tale che siano rese possibili prestazioni ottimali ed il lavoro diventi fonte di crescita personale. Il flow o “esperienza ottimale” è lo stato mentale in cui, mentre si svolge un’attività la persona si trova in una condizione di massima concentrazione, pieno coinvolgimento e benessere generalizzato e durante il quale il tempo vola. Si tratta di quel momento in cui non si è coscienti del passare del tempo perché si è talmente immersi in un compito e ci si sta godendo al massimo la situazione che non si è capaci di pensare ad altro. Fate caso a se ciò vi accade abitualmente? Se è così significa che avete consapevolezza del valore del vostro tempo e della vostra persona. Vivere il Flow nelle nostre prestazioni quotidiane fa la differenza tra una fantastica e produttiva giornata di lavoro ed una mediocre giornata di lavoro. Il nome della Teoria del Flow deriva dal fatto che, durante i colloqui e le terapie di questo psicologo, i pazienti descrivevano queste esperienze utilizzando la metafora di una corrente d’acqua che li trascinava. Le caratteristiche necessarie per vivere un’esperienza di “flow” sono:
– Il compito o la meta sono raggiungibili. Ciò fa riferimento allo stabilire obiettivi concreti;
– Dobbiamo poter concentrarci totalmente in esso;
– Il compito deve avere degli obiettivi chiari;
– Gli obiettivi chiari permettono di avere un feedback diretto e immediato;
– Agiamo senza sforzo, totalmente concentrati e senza preoccupazioni;
– Si crea un sentimento di controllo sulla situazione o sull’attività, il quale elimina la paura del fallimento;
– Sparisce la preoccupazione per la personalità e c’è una perdita della consapevolezza di sé. Quando lo stato del flow si attiva, la consapevolezza di sé sparisce. La consapevolezza va via in quanto l’attenzione è focalizzata sull’attività che spinge l’esperienza del flow. Tutta l’energia fisica e psichica è avvolta nella realizzazione del compito;
– Il senso di durata del tempo si altera;
– Il flusso sopraggiunge quando si produce un equilibrio tra l’attività che stiamo affrontando e le abilità di cui disponiamo per affrontarlo. Quest’attività non ci risulta né troppo facile né troppo complessa.
Gli ambiti di applicazione della teoria del flow al settore professionale possono essere molteplici e molto utili, ad esempio nel settore dell’istruzione, dello sport o aziendale, in quanto spiega come possono essere organizzate le attività per promuovere il divertimento e migliorare il rendimento a livello del gruppo.
